The enslaved Africans mostly came from Benin, West Central Africa and South-eastern Africa. The duration of the voyage varied from one to six months depending on the weather. The journey became more efficient as years passed, and by the nineteenth century, a trip could take only six weeks. The slaves were usually sold for labour purposes or, in some cases, traded for goods such as molasses, which was used in the making of rum. This voyage has come to be remembered for much more than transport and selling of the slaves; it represented the hardest, most dangerous and the most horrific part of the journey of the slave ships. About 15% of the Africans carried away died at sea, with death rates considerably higher in the process of capturing them and transporting them to the ships (Hooper 2). The slave traders were able to pack almost 300 slaves into most slave ships where men were typically chained together: right leg to the other manà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Å"s left leg so as to save space. This overcrowding was the major factor contributing to the outrageously high death rates because in case of an outbreak, the disease could spread fast among them. Women somehow had more room and were not put in chains like men. They were put on a hold in separate places from men (Falconbridge 19-20). The slaves were allowed to move around during the day. The Middle Passage has come to represent the ultimate in human suffering and the conditions they faced on their voyage displays the great evil of slave trade.Slave Ships Conditions during TransportationThe life aboard th e slave ship was hard. Once aboard, they could realize they were being sent far away, resulting into violence even before the ship set sail. However, such uprisings were usually put down. There were two methods of packing the slaves. One system was loose packing under which the captains transported fewer slaves in order to minimise deaths and diseases among them. The other system was tight packing which involved carrying as many slaves as the ships could carry. The choice of method of packing the slaves depended on the captain of the ship in that loose packing could bring healthier slaves to the destination, while tight packing could bring more slaves. Life below the deck was very uncomfortable because in most slave ships, the slaves were stored on shelves less than half a metre high thus limiting their ability to move (Hooper 6). The captains did not provide any kind of hygiene; a bucket was the only place for a slave to relieve himself. The buckets were not provided for each person and the only one near the bucket could use it. The outcome was that the slaves would be forced to relieve themselves where they lay (Falconbridge 20-21). The decks had a little ventilation and because of lack of sanitation, one can only imagine the stench and heat that must have been there. These could result into suffocation, and those who could not manage to live with the foul smell died. The slaves would be lying around their waste, blood and vomit due to contagious diseases due to tight packing. Although some captains would periodically appoint someone to clean the decks, most of them chose rather to leave them alone resulting in such unclean conditions. In addition, the most obvious problem was the diseases (Mc Donald 4). Slaves contacted many diseases such as chills, dysentery, smallpox, and pneumonia. Those suffering or who showed signs of smallpox or any other contagious disease were thrown overboard to prevent an epidemic abroad the ship.Food was a major problem for all aboard the ship because the captains thought that the food was expensive and hence bought as little as they could so as to save costs. It usually consisted of boiled rice, yams, horse beans or cassava flour. On rare occasions, the slaves were given a few pieces of meat in order to keep them healthy. The feeding of the slaves was done on the deck where they were taken out carefully, with sailors to feed them. It was usually done under heavy security so as to prevent a slave rebellion. Water was another issue. The captains regulated the amount of water they took; therefore, in hot weather, dehydration was common. However, most of the time, they had enough water and they often drank more water than usual because of the heat below the decksHow Slaves Were Treated During VoyageUnless slaves proved to be rebellious, the captain and the crew did not treat them ill; this act was only for commercial reasons because the death of a slave meant loss of money. Also, a healthier slave fetched more money. These instances were, however, very rare because majority of the captains and crew were notoriously brutal. Corporal punishment was common, and any form of resistance was punished through whipping, which, when done in a brutal way, resulted in fatalities. During periods of good weather, the slaves would be brought out to the deck in the mornings. Women and children were allowed to move freely around the deck, but men were always chained together because it was commonly believed that they would be the ones who could cause violence and resistance. The slaves usually received two meals a day: the first one being early in the morning and the other in the afternoon. The second meal was typically different and was often worse than the first one and spices like Cayenne pepper were added to conceal the bad taste (Falconbridge 22). There was a common belief among the slave-traders that if the slaves were given food that they were familiar with, they would stay healthier and avoi d rebellions. This is the reason why some would be given millet and cornmeal, while others were given stewed yams, cassava flour, and banana-like fruits.The captains also had to try to keep the slaves in good physical condition so as to ensure a good price. In order to achieve this, the slaves were made to à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Å"danceà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ every morning on the deck. They were to jump up and down like people who were dancing, and this caused a lot of pain to the men who were still chained together. This activity would be accompanied by poundings on a drum or iron kettle. Those who refused to dance were in most cases whipped by rope or by use of cat-o-nine tails which could slash the skin on a slaveà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s back. It was made of nine ropes coated with tar and with a knot at the end. For those ships carrying a large number of slaves, it was impossible to bring all of them to the deck for exercise. The crew would thus choose from among them those who were in most need of doing exercise . The slaves generally enjoyed the time they spent on the deck because this was the only time they were at least able to move and breathe fresh air before being taken back to the dark and filthy gloom below deck. The worst time of the Middle Passage for the slaves was during periods of bad weather such as storms. They were usually forced to stay below deck all day and night with all the foul smell, dead bodies and excrement. Modern and stylish with colourful patterns Essay The costumes were all very well picked out to suit the different characters. Lucys outfit was very modern and stylish with colourful patterns and high heels which suited her quite proud character. Her outfit was also quite tight fitting and provocative. Mac wore a suit which showed his superiority in his gang. The gangs costumes also helped separate their different characters-e.g. Snape wore a black suit with shades, which indicated that he was the cool guy in the gang and another member wore torn jeans and covered his face showing that he was the tough guy- the real gangster amongst the others. The lighting didnt change very much throughout the play- it was a bright flood across the stage and it was switched off only at the end of each scene. The transitions, in my opinion were not very well thought out and too slow which made the play drag. The use of props and furniture was somewhat conservative, where the same furniture on-stage was used for various different tasks and purposes-for example the door frames and chairs acted as part of Mr Phiris office and as the prison cell where Mac was held captive. I think that this was an area that could have been worked on as it didnt help in giving any effect to the play- I feel that the lights could have been dimmed at certain points, perhaps in the transitions, and also that they could have been focused on the areas on stage where the action was taking place, so that it could be easier for the audience to concentrate on that particular area. A good part where the lighting could have been focused on one area was in the beginning where Mr Phiri was talking to the audience- I think it would have been better if the lighting was focused on him while he was speaking, rather than the rest of the stage. The music used was very modern and energetic and really helped to lift the performance. The music was quite lively and fast. One noticeable beat was at the start of the performance where there was an upbeat song with energetic dance moves as all the actors flooded on stage, which made it entertaining to watch. Another part where the music was very effective in engaging the audience was the duologue where Polly was fighting with Lucy (one of Macs other girlfriends). Here the music was very fast again and the singing brought out the different characteristics of the women as Pollys voice was jazzy in style and controlled in contrast to Lucy who had a rougher, more modern voice and style of dance. At parts singers were stood singing backstage or during the transition changes which added a different effect to the play and made it more interesting to follow. However not all of the music was relevant to the scenes which I think could have been thought out more clearly and the lyrics were also hard to listen to at times. Overall, I feel that Makwacha Hip Hopera was a satisfactory play. I think that it needed some development in certain areas, especially in the scene transitions which I thought needed speeding up. Also at times the actors were blocking the projector and it was very clear that the light irritated them. One last point is that the music didnt always start and stop at the right time as in one case the music stopped before the actors had finished their dance but they managed to cover it up and continued dancing. So how do you keep on top of your actual job, despite holiday disruptions? Be prepared to shut out distractions.This doesn’t mean you have to hunch over your desk like Ebenezer Scrooge, frowning disapprovingly at your cheerful slacker colleagues. It just means finding ways to keep your own attention focused on the daily tasks you need to accomplish. For some, that means wearing noise-canceling headphones while working on a project or setting blocks of â€Å"head down† time where you don’t allow yourself to be distracted by things like online s hopping, social media, or extracurricular conversations with coworkers. This created a divide between communist countries and democratic counties which set up the Cold War. This divided world created a globalized economy unlike ever before, one with communist countries and one with democratic. All the countries of the world, of each government type, were interconnected and dependent on each other. The countries of the opposite group were not traded with, all the trading was done within a countries own group. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Keeping a nation’s economy going is a very difficult balancing act. Things the country itself does, like pass new laws, can effect a countries economy greatly. Situations were economies are hurt by new laws are completely in the hands of the countries government. In some situations it’s not in their control at all. This is like the situation with Scotland and its trade with Russia. The actions Russia has taken with the Ukraine have caused the European Union to put sanctions on Russia. This intern has hurt Scotland’s economy greatly. The country usually exports 45 million GPD of food and drink to Russia but 22 million GPD was stopped by the sanctions. That is a huge loss in revenue and has far reaching affects, the normal trade of these countries can be seen in the image bellow. Also it not only affects that sector of the economy but ripples through the whole economy (Maddox). However, this situation is not a new one and its causes can be traced back to the Cold W ar. Marks and Spencer’s have many different store departments but also have many different departments of their business, its functional areas. I am going to look at and investigate their human resources, administration, finance and sales and marketing departments to then see how each contributes to the running of Marks and Spencer’s. Human Resources: The human resources department aims to carry out 5 major things, these being: 1. Recruiting, keeping and dismissing employees. This is a major task for M&S as they need the right type of employees for the business to operate it’s best, also the employees shall decide the businesses success present and future. Recruiting new employees could be hiring new people from outside the business or promoting workers already working in the business. Many businesses such as M&S like recruiting from outside the business to bring new ideas and enthusiasm. M&S would want to keep all their existing employees as they would risk losing experienced and trained staff, plus recruiting new workers and training them can prove to be expensive. Sometimes M&S would have to dismiss or sack employees, this may be due if an employee cannot carry out their job efficiently or effectively. Also many employees are dismissed or made redundant, as their jobs no longer exist, say the fall in a particular product could lead to the dismissal of many staff. Working conditions includes; the cleanliness of a place, the provision of rest areas, hours of work and holidays. Working conditions have a great impact on how well a business operates and how well employees can carry out their work. They are normally a subject for negotiation between trade unions and human resources. M&S have an area for staff to relax and spend their breaks in. The whole store would be regularly cleaned every day for both the workers and customers. 3. Training, developing and promoting employees. Human resources need their staff to be able to ensure that employees are able to do their jobs, they may give training at M&S or through course at local colleges, planning jobs so that employees enjoy new experiences and develop new skills also promoting employees to more senior positions to give the business the skills and experience it needs. 4. Negotiating with trade unions. The human resources department of M&S would have to discuss and agree pay and working conditions with trade unions or other representatives of the workforce. This process is called collective bargaining. 5. Health and safety is an important responsibility for human resources, as it requires M&S to provide all employees with a secure risk free working environment. Personnel/staffing officer Keeping staff records, monitoring staff welfare. Health and safety officer He/she makes sure all aspects of health and safety are in order for staff matters. Human resources administrative assistants Administrative work relating to the human resource function. Finance: Now I am going to look at the finance function of M&S. The finance department of a business manages the money for the business. The department controls the financial transactions of a business and help managers to plan for the future. The various activities of the finance department are: 1. Recording all the financial matters of M&S as they are constantly spending money or receiving it from sales. It is vital that they keep all records of all the activities in order to, calculate whether the business is being profitable, asses how much tax the business will have to pay and to help managers to make the right decisions. 2. All businesses have to prepare their accounts in order to summarise their financial affairs during a year, plc’s are required to publish their results legally as they are a public company such as M&S. They have to do the following; the balance sheet which states both what a businesses aims and its debts, profit and loss account- which records the profit or loss made during a lengthy period of time usually a year, the inland revenue have to confirm that M&S has paid the correct amount of tax, suppliers are able to see whether business can pay it’s debts and finally shareholders can decide whether it’s worth investing in the business or not. 3. M&S have to pay the wages of all their employees and it involves the finance department in a number of ways. The business has to deduct income tax and national insurance from each employees pay, it may be required to operate a pension scheme for its more elderly employees and to make sure the correct amount of wages or salaries has been given out to employees. 4. All businesses need some resources and capital to trade successfully. To purchase these resources businesses may need to raise large sums of money, known as capital, but not M&S as they are already fully developed and expanding across the globe. But nevertheless a business has 2 main sources of capital; a loan raised by borrowing money from a bank or another business and retained profits, if M&S has been very profitable they may be able to invest in the business and obtain resources they may need. Some typical job roles in the finance function in M&S would include; Job Description Financial director Giving advice to senior managers on the overall financial policy of M&S. Overseeing the budget of M&S. In charge of all finance function in M&S. Financial Manager Managing the finance function and staff. He/she also advises other members of staff with any financial queries. Chief Accountant He/She ensures that final preparation of accounts M&S are in good and correct order. Management accountant He/She produces continuous financial information to M&S. Credit Controller Advising on credit policies. Making sure money owing to M&S kept in confidence. Credit control clerks Helps check accounts of new and existing customers accounts. He/She works below the Credit Controller but assist the credit controller. They also remind customers of overdue payments Chief Cashier He/She is responsible for the receipt, safe keeping accounting and banking all money received from boots. Payroll Administrator He/She is in control of ensuring that all of M&S employees payroll and salary/wages section. Wages Clerks He/She helps and assists the payroll administrator, in the production of wages ands salary details. Administration: The administration department provides important support services to other departments in the business. Not all admin departments in all businesses are the same. In small businesses the admin department may take responsibility for human resources or finance, but in a large organisation such as M&S it is usually most likely to be specialised. The admin department makes considerable use of computers and IT as it is required for a lot of their jobs. There are as always many activities for the administration department; they can be broken down into 5 groups: 1. Clerical services are the main role of every admin department. The department may provide clerical services to all other departments within the business. These maybe; word-processing, making telephone calls, booking accommodation for staff, sorting and delivering incoming mail and posting outgoing mail, organising meetings and keeping records of what takes place at these meetings, talking responsibly on behalf of the whole company and creating and keeping records of the company. 2. All businesses require regular cleaning M&S is no exception as it is especially true as M&S have cafes, which require thorough cleanliness. Admin also organises the maintenance of the building, they may decorate the inside and outside of the building if they wish. 3. Health and safety is a big issue with all businesses. It includes; providing safety clothing, warnings for workers, ensuring that there are no dangers around the workplace and providing regular medical checks for those working in risky environments. 4. Security is an increasingly important issue for all businesses, security duties would include; signing visitors in and out of premises, ensuring that unauthorised people are kept out by use of patrols or even guard dogs, protecting computer systems from hackers, patrolling to prevent shoplifting by employing guards in uniform. 5. Information technology is being more widely used by the minute, nearly all businesses use some form of IT nowadays. The admin department may use IT to; make spreadsheet for financial data, a database of customers and employees, payroll systems to calculate employees wages and salaries, e mail for communicating internal and external, web based systems, web sites for selling goods etc. Typical job roles of the administration function would be: Job Description Administration manager Managing the administration operations of M&S. Administration assistant Assists with administrative tasks in particular areas. Secretary of Boots A senior executive responsible for all the legal affairs of M&S. Marketing is the process that helps all businesses to discover and meet the needs of customers. Tiberius spent very little time in Rome during his reign as Emperor an d retired to the country to spend the last eleven years of his life. While living in the country Tiberius set new standards of debauchery, going as far as creating a new government office for the originating of unfamiliar carnal pleasures (Cawthorne 67).
